April, May and June are busy months for us here at Be The Best Sport. With many things going on, here are events and news we are excited to share with you!

Honoree at 12th Annual Woodbury Ball For Autism
On April 17, 2015 at the 12th annual Woodbury Ball For Autism, Michael Furino, Frank Furino, and Al Sontag of Be The Best Sport were honored for their dedication to helping provide sport and recreation programs to children with autism. The sold out event was a huge success and helped raise money for the North Shore Autism Circle, who has generously pledged up to $28,000 to Be The Best Sport’s scholarship program for 2015. The event also benefited other organizations who share the common mission of helping children and adults with autism including Autism Speaks Long Island, Spectrum Designs, and The Adler Center for Special Needs at the Mid-Island Y JCC. The event featured an inclusive evening of fabulous food, sushi, open bar, a “selfie” booth, and an outrageous auction that helped raise funds for the featured organizations of the night. A special performance by Almost Queen capped off the fun-filled night
Heroes On Our Island TV Show

This past month, Be The Best Sport was featured on Verizon FiOS on their inspiring TV show “Heroes On Our Island,” which profiles positive people who call Long Island home and are “angels among us.” The show featured an inspiring story about one of the participants in our program, who communicates through his iPad.

The show also features Be The Best Sport’s Special Olympics Basketball Team, and a mom’s tale about her sons growth and boost in confidence as well as a personal account from one of our basketball team participants.

Online Scholarship Fundraising Campaign

This month, Be The Best Sport started its annual online scholarship fundraising campaign. Through outside funding and campaigns like this, we are able to cut program fees to participants up to 50%, maintain a high quality program, keep class sizes small, and employ the highest quality staff. In 2014, we were able to offer 90 participants a 50% fee reduction because of fundraising campaigns. In 2015, we currently have funding to offer 190 fee reductions to participants and are looking to offer at least 250 fee reductions. With increased funding from campaigns like this, we have been able to incrementally increase the size of our program and service more participants each year for the last 5 years. Lower program fees help us impact more children and adults. With higher participation rates, we are able to apply for more funding from private donors and foundations and continue to fulfill our goal of providing a high quality program at a low cost to participants families.

Help be a part of our mission to service more children and adults than 2014!

Munsey Park Women’s Club Donation For New Bike Riding Program

The Munsey Park Women’s Club has generously donated $1,000 to Be The Best Sport for new equipment. A portion of this donation helped to start a Bike Riding Program sponsored by Manhasset SEPTA called “Lose The Training Wheels.” Be The Best Sport has partnered with the Manhasset SEPTA to offer FREE Bike Riding lessons to over 30 participants in Port Washington and Manhasset. The program has been a great success and participants are now riding “Training Wheel Free.” The generous donation helps cover the cost of bike safety harnesses and helps Be The Best Sport instructors ensure that the children are safe and secure during the riding lessons.
